Death of 13-Year-Old Rape Victim Exposes Illegal Abortion Clinics in Peshawar

Gurria, a 13-year-old girl, had the horrific horror of serial rape last month. They hurried to a hospital in Peshawar because she was experiencing severe stomach discomfort and felt impelled to tell her mother about the horrible event. There, they learned a heartbreaking truth. Six months pregnant Gurria and her distraught mother looked for an abortion clinic nearby.

Gurria underwent the treatment, but it was plagued by issues that resulted in severe blood loss. Gurria’s mother rushed her to Lady Reading Hospital in an effort to preserve her daughter. Tragically, Gurria passed away from her wounds on May 26—47 hours later.

Dr. Muhammad Umar, the superintendent of police, wasted little time in capturing a 25-year-old guy who had admitted to the rape. Gurria’s mother was first reluctant to reveal information about the abortion clinic, but she eventually did, and it helped lead to the arrest of individuals responsible for the illegal enterprise. The trial’s verdict is still up in the air.

Law enforcement organisations are aware of the proliferation of illegal abortion facilities in Peshawar.

Senior attorney Khushnood Zakirullah claims that in cases when the mother’s ability to give birth poses a serious risk, there may be measures for allowing abortions under stringent guidelines. However, the number of illegal clinics is increasing, endangering public safety and raising questions about the efficiency of law enforcement.

Lawyers’ reports and information from the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) police point to a troubling pattern of improper handling of rape cases. Numerous victims go without justice since convictions are unusual. The province has had hundreds of recorded rape instances in the past year, most of which involved youngsters.

Victims of rape have been forced to seek help from illegal clinics because rape cases have not been dealt with efficiently. Change-makers contend that the police must step up their efforts to stop further catastrophes and guarantee the victims’ justice.
